I am so excited to be quilting along with you!  It feels forever ago since we announced and my hands have been itching to make this quilt again.

Quilt alongs are so great for connecting with other quilters and making friends.  I owe all of my quilty friendships around the world to adventures just like this one.  Be sure to like and comment other quilters progress on Instagram to get the most from this experience.  We are using the #littlemisssawtoothqal.  So be sure to tag all your progress photos with it.  This will be your entry into the giveaways as well.

This Week’s Task

We are knocking out all of the flying geese units this next two weeks.  There are 60 of them!  I know, I know, but we are making them 4-at-a-time, so it goes quickly (kinda :)).  We are using the very popular no-waste method to make them.  I used to dislike this method citing that it made it harder to get a proper geese unit, but I’ve worked at it and now I’m wondering what was wrong with me before.  It’s clever and accurate.  I wonder what amazing quilter discovered it?!

There’s a video tutorial below to help you on your way!  But first, let’s cover some tips!

Tips + Thoughts

  • The flying geese units are our star points for all of our stars.  You may want some variety with them or you may want them all to be the same color/fabric.  The fabric B squares are the actual star points.
  • There’s no excess when making our flying geese.  The only trimming down you will need to do is the little dog ears.  Flying geese end up measuring 3.5×6.5″.
  • Fabric A is your background fabric.  You may have all the same background or you might mix it up.

If you prefer to foundation paper piece to the way I’ve written the pattern, Nicole Buckley has generously provided us with paper piecing patterns (you will need to already know how to paper piece).  Find the paper piecing pattern for flying geese hereRemember that you need 4 per star.

A new pattern releases every two weeks on Fridays.  You don’t have to rush or hurry or stress yourself out in any way, but you can use the quilt along’s schedule to keep yourself on track if you’d like.  If you have a different way of doing things than the pattern or are mixing things up to do your own thing, FEEL FREE!  I always tell participants to do YOU.  You don’t have to do anything exactly the way I’m doing it.

I’ll be back in two weeks to tackle our first three star blocks.  In the meantime, let’s get chatty on IG.  You can follow me here.  Hugs and happy sewing!
