I am so excited to be quilting along with you!  It feels forever ago since we announced and my hands have been itching to make this quilt again.

Quilt alongs are so great for connecting with other quilters and making friends.  I owe all of my quilty friendships around the world to adventures just like this one.  Be sure to like and comment other quilters progress on Instagram to get the most from this experience.  We are using the #littlemisssawtoothqal.  So be sure to tag all your progress photos with it.  This will be your entry into the giveaways as well.

This Week’s Task

We are knocking out all of the flying geese units this next two weeks.  There are 60 of them!  I know, I know, but we are making them 4-at-a-time, so it goes quickly (kinda :)).  We are using the very popular no-waste method to make them.  I used to dislike this method citing that it made it harder to get a proper geese unit, but I’ve worked at it and now I’m wondering what was wrong with me before.  It’s clever and accurate.  I wonder what amazing quilter discovered it?!

There’s a video tutorial below to help you on your way!  But first, let’s cover some tips!

Tips + Thoughts

  • The flying geese units are our star points for all of our stars.  You may want some variety with them or you may want them all to be the same color/fabric.  The fabric B squares are the actual star points.
  • There’s no excess when making our flying geese.  The only trimming down you will need to do is the little dog ears.  Flying geese end up measuring 3.5×6.5″.
  • Fabric A is your background fabric.  You may have all the same background or you might mix it up.
Click here for the Flying Geese 4-at-a-time pattern.

If you prefer to foundation paper piece to the way I’ve written the pattern, Nicole Buckley has generously provided us with paper piecing patterns (you will need to already know how to paper piece).  Find the paper piecing pattern for flying geese hereRemember that you need 4 per star.

Giveaway Details

Just a reminder, you can enter the giveaway by posting your progress on Instagram using the #littlemisssawtoothQAL.  Havel’s will be giving away random prizes to one winner each week.  Winners will be chosen and announced on Instagram @Havels_Sewing every Thursday after a pattern releases.  You don’t have to be completed with each pattern release to win, you only have to post progress.

Get a personalized Little Miss Sawtooth quilt along label for your quilt.

Get the label here.

A new pattern releases every two weeks on Fridays.  You don’t have to rush or hurry or stress yourself out in any way, but you can use the quilt along’s schedule to keep yourself on track if you’d like.  If you have a different way of doing things than the pattern or are mixing things up to do your own thing, FEEL FREE!  I always tell participants to do YOU.  You don’t have to do anything exactly the way I’m doing it.

I’ll be back in two weeks to tackle our first three star blocks.  In the meantime, let’s get chatty on IG.  You can follow me here.  Hugs and happy sewing!

Easy Knit Cover Up

Easy Knit Cover Up
Alison J. O’Grady
Sew Bee It Clothier

This is a quick and easy project to keep your shoulders cozy in those overly air
conditioned stores in the summertime. This may have you making a couple for yourself
but be prepared for friends asking for you to create them one as well!

Materials List:
1. Havel’s Serrated Shears
2. 1 ⅝ yards of a lightweight knit. {I used a metallic tricot knit.}
3. Thread to match
4. Sewing machine
5. Large size paper plate
6. A sheet of tissue paper
7. Pins

Often sewists shy away from slippery fabrics like knits and tricot because they can be
difficult when cutting. I have found that the best results come with using the right tools
for the job.

Serrated shears have tiny, miniscule teeth that grab the fabric with each cut, rather than
pushing the fabric away as you bring both blades together. You will have better control
with your cutting, so these shears will be perfect for this project. Let’s get going!

● Fold fabric wrong sides together with the fold at the top of your cutting area, and
the selvedges together but closest to you, at the bottom. Trim each raw end with
your rotary cutter for a nice clean finish.

● Use pins or clips at the selvedge to keep fabric from shifting.

● At the folded edge, measure from your neatened edge to what will be our center,
about 28 inches. Place a pin or clip here to mark. This will be the center of our
neck opening.

● Now measure out 5 inches in each direction from that center mark placing a pin
at the 5 inch measurement. Cut on the fold from one end of the pin to the other
pin in a slight bow, using serrated shears for best results.

● Turn this raw edge to the wrong side and edge stitch with a small stitch on your
machine. You could easily use a fabric bias strip to finish also as this knit/tricot
won’t fray!

● Take a paper plate and lay it on your tissue paper or the paper you have chosen.

● {I use this method when I need a good rounded edge and this fits our project!}
You’ll trace the edge of the plate onto the paper using about a quarter of the
plate and that will give us a pattern. Cut on the traced line.

● Fold your cover-up, fold with the neck opening at the top, selvedges at the
bottom. Fold one nicely cut edge over to the other so it creates a crosswise fold.

● Place your rounded corner pattern on the lower cut edge side flush with that
edge, but 1 inch above the selvedges.

● Pin your pattern and start cutting at the top of the rounded edge pattern and
continue around the rounded edge and continue cutting 1 inch off the selvedge
till you reach the fold. You may have to neaten edges but those serrated shears
will do the trick nicely. Congrats and admire your creation!

You can either slip this over your head or tie it around your shoulders. Either way, you
will have clean, neat edges with a great appearance.

About Alison J. O’Grady of Sew Bee It Clothier

As a frustrated clothing shopper, I realized that by creating and sewing my garments, there are not any others like them in the world! I loved that. The sleeves are long enough, the colors are what looks best on me, and this garment can be just what I am so proud to wear.
THAT is why I decided to open my business, to offer my skills to others that recognized the quality and workmanship I can provide.

Little Miss Sawtooth Fabric Selections

This post is a part of the Little Miss Sawtooth Quilt Along. Below is a list of all the posts and articles on this series.

Oh! Sweet lovelies! It’s time to start choosing fabrics. I’m releasing two PDFs today for the Little Miss Sawtooth Star Quilt Along. If you aren’t signed up for this quilt along yet, you can do so in this post.

Quick Notes

Let’s get all on the same page real quick, shall we? This is a free quilt along. It will release slowly. Today I’m releasing the Introduction PDF and the Coloring Sheet (page 1 and 2). The quilt along doesn’t actually begin until September 6. Starting on that soon to come day I’ll be releasing two patterns every other week for us to work on.

I know there are some of you who just really feel the need to have a paper copy of a pattern in your hand, I’ve taken care of you. You can get a paper pattern here (available as a pre-order for now). It’s not free. Naturally, if you purchase the paper pattern, you do end up with the whole pattern in your hands all at once and can work on it at will while the rest of us work at the bi-weekly pace.

Fabric Requirements

So here you go. Download the PDFs by clicking the links below. The “Introduction” is just a bit about the quilt along, and includes your fabric requirements and supplies (a ruler or two you’ll see me use).

I will be using the Quilt in a Day Half Square Triangle Ruler many times in my video tutorials. There is one block that it is essential for (block 4 Gabrielle). If you don’t have it, I’m including a template, but let’s be real, it’s easier with the ruler. You’ll also see me using Havel’s new 6.5″ square ruler and my fussy cut rulers too.

Remember that Havel’s is sponsoring this quilt along and because of them, it’s free for you. Let’s show them some love if we can. You can use my coupon code “SouthernCharm7” at Havel’s Sewing and receive $7 off any purchase of $25 or more.

Let’s Talk Fabric

I don’t know about you, but after I’ve decided on the pattern of quilt I’m going to make, it’s ALL ABOUT THE FABRIC. You just have to be as obsessed as me, aren’t you?

This Wednesday, we will be digging in deep talking about fabrics for this quilt. I’m talking what fabrics look best, backgrounds vs. prints, what’s going where and how I’ve got the fabric requirements divided up. We will be discussing all of this on Wednesday. Plus, I’ll be showing you all the blocks that we will be making in this quilt!

Today, however, I’m showing you the fabrics I’ve chosen to sale over at Meander + Make curated especially for this quilt along. I’ve made two bundles for you to choose from (if you want them). Let’s gush!

Our first bundle is called Autumn Joy. These are the fabrics I will be using in my own quilt that I make with you. I may add in a fussy cut or two if the mood strikes. Fabrics in this bundle are listed below, but if you are interested in the whole bundle, you’ll find it here. There is lots of peach and blush, brown, gold and a toasty camel color too that I’m absolutely in love with.

The second bundle I’ve curated is called Spellbound. This bundle is extra luscious. These are what I always call moody colors. There’s rich maroon or wine, purples, a bit of gold, violets and bluesy shades including aqua and teal.

You can find the whole fat quarter bundle here.

Please keep in mind that the bundles above are for the prints or colored part of the quilt (the star inside and the star points). It does NOT include the background for your quilt. I have however created special listings for scrappy low volume background bundles as well that will include enough background fabric for the whole quilt, just in case you want.

If you want more details on this scrappy low volume background I’m going on about, you can read about it here.

Patchwork + Quilt (a class for learning to quilt)

[su_button url=”http://meanderandmake.com/patchwork-quilt-a-class-made-especially-for-beginners-to-learn-to-make-quilts/” target=”self” style=”default” background=”#63e0d6″ color=”#FFFFFF” size=”3″ wide=”no” center=”no” radius=”auto” icon=”” icon_color=”#FFFFFF” text_shadow=”none” desc=”” onclick=”” rel=”” title=”” id=”” class=””]Take the Class[/su_button]

If you are signed up for the Little Miss Sawtooth Star quilt along newsletter, you’ll receive an email this Wednesday that will direct you to that post with the deep talk about the quilt. Look for that if you are curious or want further details.

Please don’t feel any pressure to purchase one of the fabric bundles from me. This is a great quilt for scraps (except the background), so you may want to shop your own stash. If you do end up purchasing a bundle of fabric, I just want to give you a big hug and say thank you. I really appreciate your support with the fabric shop. It’s so scary to buy that much fabric at once when I’m leaning towards growing slowly, but with the last quilt along we did you made me sell out of bundles on the first day. I was so unbelievably grateful. Fingers crossed you love these bundles as much as you did those.

Thanks again, sweet friends! It’s so nice to have a community of such loving makers.

The Next Quilt Along starts this September!

Announcing The Little Miss Sawtooth Quilt Along!

I am over the moon to announce this. I thought after making this quilt, 7 or 8 times?, that would be enough for me, but apparently not. That last one I did, sealed my fate. Plus, you keep emailing me and hounding me for a PDF pattern, so ….. I’m ready to make it with you! Again!

So let’s recap all of this for anyone that is new around here. Little Miss Sawtooth was a quilt I designed back in 2017 and immediately hosted my first ever quilt along for. It was tiny, only a handful of quilters made it with me. I’ve since made this quilt a whole bunch more times.

Little Miss Sawtooth is my most popular free pattern on my blog. I’ve also given it a refresh with a PDF pattern and step by step instructions. There’s new blocks to love too! Let’s dive into all the details, shall we?

  • December 13, 2019 – 2 star blocks
  • December 27, 2019 – Background blocks
  • January 3, 2020 – Assembling quilt top

What are we making

We are making a sampler quilt that is modern-ish. We’re still using the traditional grid, but we have lots of negative space for you to play with. The Little Miss Sawtooth quilt plays with the old favorite block: the sawtooth star, but it changes out the center of all of them, making each block very unique. Sampler quilts are a perfect way to learn new techniques and grow your skills.

Skill Level Needed

This quilt is easy, beginner friendly, not fussy (although there will be fussy cutting). If you haven’t mastered the flying geese unit, you will! There is a gazillion of those little babies in this quilt, so prepare to get super friendly with them.

Here’s what you will learn if knew to quilting:

  • Flying Geese 4-at-a-time (the no waste method that I used to shun and have now embraced. ha!)
  • 2 methods for making Half Square Triangles
  • Basic piecing skills
  • Basic seam pressing skills
  • Snowballing or adding corners to squares
  • Turning blocks on point and trimming

Supplies

An Introduction PDF will be sent you (if signed up for the newsletter) a month or so before we begin the quilt along with fabric requirements. This is a very scrap friendly quilt and you are encouraged to use what you have on hand. I will be using scraps and fat quarters for the color parts of my stars. Everything else, I will be using yardage for. There will be fabric bundles available for those of you who want or who don’t have enough scraps (more on that later).

Tools I’m using:
