You made it!  We are about to have a finished quilt top!  These are exciting times, I know.  I am positively jumping up and down and squealing.  I love a finished quilt top.  We aren’t snuggling with out quilt just yet, but we’ve met a threshold.  It’s time to pat yourself on the back and be proud.  Maybe even strut around like a peacock.  🙂

This Week’s Task

All that’s left to do is sew all our blocks together.  Eeeek!!  I’m not going to lie this is one of my favorite parts.  We’ve done the hard work, and now we watch it come together.

Finished Quilt Top

There’s not much for me to ramble on about this time around.  I’ve said and shared all the things I can think of.  So let’s just chat about what’s next.

You might need backing and batting for your quilt, don’t forget that Meander + Make has batting by the yard in my favorite:  Warm and Natural.  We also have plenty of fabrics to choose for backing.  I’ve got a coupon code just for you!  Use code SAWTOOTH at checkout and receive 20% off any order.  This coupon is good only once per customer and it will expire on 1/15/20.  It will also work on the personalized quilt label made especially for this quilt.

Also, Ginger Quilter has offered to longarm any Little Miss Sawtooth quilt with a 20% discount when you use code SAWTOOTH.

Let’s not forget about our amazing sponsor, Havel’s Sewing, who made this quilt along possible and free to you.  Show them some support the next time you need rotary blades or a mat or any of my favorite snips and scissors.  Use my coupon code at Havel’s and receive $7 off any purchase of $25 or more.  My code there is SOUTHERNCHARM7.

And finally, finally, finally!  Many of you have been asking about the next quilt along.  I do have one planned and you can read more about it here.

I hope your holiday week was the best ever!  Maybe you are done with all the gallivanting around and having an easy day for yourself and might even do a little sewing.  I certainly am!  It’s good timing because this round is our easiest pattern yet.  We are only filling in the gaps this time with simple four patches.  So get to fabric choosing and then to chain piecing!  You can worry about getting your house in order and the holiday decor put away later.  🙂

Product Spotlight

This Week’s Task

We’ve got fifteen 4-patches to complete.  This is that bit of negative space between each block.  It’s also a chance to get your scrappy low volume on!  Or not, just whatever you want.  🙂  This community loves to let everyone do their thing, whatever that may be.  So feel free to go wild and different!

4-Patches

After all the blocks we’ve made together, I know this is one that you totally got!  Easy peasy lemon squeezy!  But let’s touch on a few things, before I leave you with it.  You don’t have to go scrappy like me, you might want to just use different shades of white and cream solids.  There’s a few under the #littlemisssawtoothqal that did just that and they look amazing.  You don’t even have to go white.  Under the hashtag, I’ve also seen one in black scrappy and one in yellow scrappy.  They are gorgeous!  I’ve seen a few already that used a more traditional 4-patch with only two colors which ends up looking a bit like a chain and changes up the look of the quilt.  Those looked good too, so get creative and do your thing!

Well I’m ready to get my 4-patches on the design wall and stare at them for a few days and then get to sewing them together.  But we will talk about that more next round.  Until then, take care and happy sewing!

Little Miss Sawtooth Quilt Along – #8 – Juliana + Sofia

Hello, hello!  I’m hoping this post finds you in the midst of a lovely holiday season.  The busyness of the season may cause many of you to fall a bit behind, but please don’t worry about that.  Get things done in your own time and remember we are giving away prizes every two weeks to a winner who posts their progress,  staying caught up on all the blocks is not a MUST.  I know that many others have jumped ahead with finished quilt tops and I just want to remind everyone that Ginger Quilter is offering to quilt your Little Miss Sawtooth quilt with a 20% discount when you use code SAWTOOTH.

Let’s get to our last two star blocks, shall we?!

Product Spotlight

This Week’s Task

Today we are working on Juliana and Sofia.  Two very fun blocks!  One traditional and one brand new.

Juliana

Juliana is a traditional churn dash block.  The churn dash was one of the very first blocks I ever made when I first started quilting, and it’s a favorite of SO MANY quilters.  I happen to have a sweet little churn dash quilt from my grandmother’s closet on my guest bed that I keep meaning to show you!

I’ve used Add it up in Cactus and Discovered Warmth in my block.

Tips + Thoughts

  • Diagonal seam tape makes this one move quicker.  I’m still so pleased with this product.
Click here for the  Juliana pattern.

If you prefer to foundation paper piece instead of the way I’ve written the pattern, Nicole Buckley has generously provided us with a paper piecing pattern (you will need to already know how to paper piece).  Find the paper piecing pattern for Juliana here.

Sofia

So Sofia is one of those blocks that you make and have to trim down.  Think something similar to a granny square.  You’ll need a 6.5″ square ruler, but I’m sure you have something that will work on hand, even the HST Square Up Ruler will work if you have that.  If you take a look at the diagram, she’s not confusing.  The block is very tight though.  A scant 1/4″ seam allowance will be most helpful.  I lost some of the corners in my own block, so I thought I’d warn you.

My fabrics are:  Add it Up in cactus, Rose Tiles, and Bees and Bits.

Tips + Thoughts

  • Use a scant 1/4″ seam.
  • Double check that your ruler is centered and all corners are within the seam allowance when you trim down.

So this will bring all the stars to a finish!  If you’ve made it this far, give yourself a big pat on the back.  You deserve it!  That was a lot of different blocks!  It’s easy breezing from this point.  I’d love it if you posted a picture of all your stars together over on Instagram.  I’m so excited to see them and ooh and aah over them with you.

Hugs and happy sewing and happy holidays!

Little Miss Sawtooth Quilt Along – #7 – Jada and Alana

This post is a part of the Little Miss Sawtooth quilt along that starts September 6, 2019 and ends January 10, 2020.

Well, if you are in the US, I hope you just had a lovely Thanksgiving.  My tummy is still full of all the yummies and my feet still hurt with all the cooking that needed doing.  I have no plans to shop except online, but do be safe if you are out and about chasing sales today.

Hopefully, you’ll find the time to whip up these two blocks this round.  Pretty simple, but I’m sure partial seams are new to some of you.  Never fear!  I’m here to hold your hand and show you how unscary this really is.  🙂

Product Spotlight

This Week’s Task

We are working on Jada and Alana this round.  Alana is from my original pattern, but I did change up all the cuts.  Jada is a new block created just this past summer.  She is so much fun!  Well, both are.  Let’s get started!

Jada

Jada is such a fun block.  She does use partial seams though.  When I think of partial seams, I think of scary Lone Star quilts and adding those tricky corner pieces.  This is nothing like that.  This is simple and easy and the video tutorial will help you bunches if you get stuck.

Jada is my take on a pinwheel block.  I’ve used Pure in Raw Gold, Floral Elements in Spicy Brown, Fields of Goldenrod, and Aerial Clay.

Tips + Thoughts

  • Pressing seams is important on this block.  One of my testers said that she preferred pressing towards the center, but I’ve written the pattern to press them open.  Do what you prefer.
  • Starch, starch, starch.
  • Diagonal seam tape makes this one move quicker.
Click here for the  Jada pattern.

If you prefer to foundation paper piece instead of the way I’ve written the pattern, Nicole Buckley has generously provided us with a paper piecing pattern (you will need to already know how to paper piece).  Find the paper piecing pattern for Jada here.

Alana

Alana is your simple block this round.  When I designed her I was thinking bow tie or just a bow, but the more I like her the more I see a thimble.  I guess she can be whatever you want her to be.  🙂

My fabrics are:  Add it Up in cactus, Passionate Spirit in salmon, Illusion in pink and Rose Tiles.

Tips + Thoughts

  • You got this!!

I’m thinking I need to bring in a little more yellow gold and that should do it!  One more block with the darker brown too.  How are you doing?  Are you loving your work?  I’m so loving making this quilt with you!

Hugs and happy sewing!

Little Miss Sawtooth Quilt Along – #6 – Aliyah + Asha

This post is a part of the Little Miss Sawtooth quilt along that starts September 6, 2019 and ends January 10, 2020.

Well here we are on post #6.  We are past the halfway mark.  Only a handful of star blocks to make now.  I have all of my blocks up on the design wall and I’m in the habit of gazing at them before moving on to my next two blocks.  What colors am I lacking, what colors do I not need to use any more of?  I’ve been leaning into that raw gold solid quite a bit, so should I lessen that up now?  These are my thoughts.  I’m gifting this quilt to my daughter for her birthday.  She’s been saving up for a blush pink sofa and I want this quilt to fit with that.

How are you choosing fabrics?  Where will your quilt end up?

Product Spotlight

This Week’s Task

This round we are working on Aliyah and Asha.  Both are fairly simple blocks and shouldn’t give you too much of a fuss.

Aliyah

Aliyah’s center is a very traditional quilt block called a bear paw.  I have yet to make a bear paw quilt, but I do have it on my bucket list, so fingers crossed one day.  I changed up my block from the pattern a bit.  I wanted to use more of that Simple Living fabric fussy cuts, so all of my 4-patch came from that fabric.  I also made all of my half square triangles (the claws) in one single fabric instead of different ones.

My fabrics are:  Simple Living, Floral Elements in Spicy Brown and Rooted in Warmth, Illusion in Pink.

Tips + Thoughts

  • Be sure to pay attention to placement on the HSTs.  Each side is pointing in two different directions.
Click here for the Aliyah pattern.

If you prefer to foundation paper piece Aliyah instead of the way I’ve written the pattern, Nicole Buckley has generously provided us with a paper piecing pattern (you will need to already know how to paper piece).  Find the paper piecing pattern for Aliyah here.

Asha

I really love Asha!  Although, I do wish I’d chosen a different fabric for my B fabric.  I think the impact would have been better had I chosen something a bit brighter.  Asha uses a lot of the snowball technique.  She’s a fast finish.

My fabrics are:  Discovered Warmth, Raw Gold solid, and Bees & Bits.

Tips + Thoughts

If you prefer to foundation paper piece Asha instead of the way I’ve written the pattern, Nicole Buckley has generously provided us with a paper piecing pattern (you will need to already know how to paper piece).  Find the paper piecing pattern for Asha here.

Looking at my blocks above, I know I need to add a few more bits of that darker brown in and probably more of the corals and pinks.  We are getting there though and I’m enjoying this process immensely.  I’ve probably got more than enough of that Raw Gold.  Let’s see if I can keep my hands from grabbing it.  🙂

Hugs and happy sewing!
